My sister, Debbie, and I are both in the throes of remodeling. I am still shaking my head as to why we chose to do it at the same time. Because it isn’t my first rodeo, she consults with me on things I have experienced that she hasn’t. I am glad to assist however I can because I know how overwhelming it can be. It is messy,nerve-wracking, and always takes longer than you had scheduled in your head or on your calendar. And then there’s the things that come up that no one expected. Ugh! They always add to the timeline and, of course, to the pocketbook.
As I was pondering my latest surprise, it hit me just how much all this emulates everyday life. You have your plans in mind and then, bam, out of the blue comes something unexpected. It can be a little thing, like a flat tire, or it can be a life-altering event, like a sudden death or a devastating health diagnosis. It is in these “surprises” that you have to find your balance because many times they can simply knock you off your feet.
So, how do we even do that? I believe we do it by keeping our eye on the goal. As believers, our goal is heaven. Colossians 3:2 says to “Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth.” If we keep an eternal perspective, the things that go awry here on earth don’t knock us back quite as hard. We understand that better things are ahead and that gives us the faith and strength to plow on through.
That is how I am striving to muddle through the dust and noise and extra expense of this remodel; keeping my eye on the end result. Yes, it is a mess right now and an end doesn’t seem very close, but I know that before very long there will be a beautiful new bathroom and closet that I can enjoy until the end of my days. Then I will be moving to the mansion that Jesus has prepared for me in heaven.
Lots of love, Sharon
